Though it would be impossible to separate Hispanic Heritage from the overall history of Texas, we set aside a month each year–from September 15 to October 15–to focus on the specific contributions of notable Hispanic heroes. If you would like to learn more about the role of Hispanic Texans in Texas history, I highly recommend this brochure from the Texas Historical Commission as a great starting place!

Texas is blessed to have a unique blend of cultures interwoven to form a rich tapestry of history and customs found nowhere else! Like a fine impressionist painting where the vibrant image is composed of a myriad of multicolored dots, as we learn to take pride in the contributions of our own heritage and appreciate the contributions made by others, we learn to better understand the whole picture of the “Texas experience”!

If you’re looking for a field trip to expand on this idea, the Institute of Texan Cultures under the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio has an amazing display of the diverse people groups who have settled in Texas. I especially enjoy going to the institute of Texan Cultures during their Texas Folklife Festival in June.
