In honor of Independence Day, I bring you the Schoolhouse Rock classic “How a Bill Becomes Law”.
The American colonists fought for independence from a tyrannical king in England. He made laws and changed laws to suit his whims and placed burdens on the citizens without care for their interests.
The Texas colonists fought for independence from a tyrannical dictator in Mexico. He made laws and changed laws to suit his whims and placed burdens on the citizens without care for their interests.
The concept that each man, woman, and child has a God-given right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” was so vital that people have been willing to die to insure those precious rights for others.
This is what Independence Day is about.
It is important that you understand the freedoms they died to give you.
It is important that you understand the American Constitution (and the Texas Constitution, which was patterned after it) and the boundaries of the government as a whole and of each branch.
Only the legislature, elected to represent the citizens, may make laws or change laws.
The executive branch (presidents and governors) are responsible for seeing that the laws are faithfully followed.
The judicial branch is charged to make sure that the laws are just and that people are treated fairly.
If you don’t know what you’ve been given, you may not recognize what you’ve lost when someone takes it away.
