…you’ve got a great choice of field trips with deep significance to Texas history. This is where some of the first explorers arrived and where Texans first fought for freedom from a repressive Mexican dictator. Later, it is where former slaves at last received news of freedom.
The Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport, where artifacts from LaSalle’s ship, LaBelle, were restored.
Calhoun County Museum (Port Lavaca)
Museum of the Coastal Bend (Victoria) and
Palacios Area Historical Association (Palacios), and La Petite Belle, a half-scale reconstruction in Palacios home port.
The San Jacinto Museum of History in La Porte celebrates the 18 minute victory that made Texas a nation. (You might want to follow up with a Texas Independence tour of Presidio La Bahia at Goliad and the Star of the Republic Museum and Independence Hall at Washington-on-the-Brazos. These are great places to introduce students to the sweeping saga of our state.
If you prefer something even more interactive, try the George Ranch Historical Park at Richmond.
