When Texas defied Santa Anna’s dictatorship, the colonial government of Texas declared independence and began to raise an army, but few people realize that they also raised funds for a navy.
In November 1835, the General Council approved funds for a Texas Navy—four ships to defend the coastline against Mexican blockades.
The Texas Navy was active from 1835 until 1846, when the Texas Navy was incorporated into the US Navy as Texas became a state in the United States.
