Texas is NOT “flat”! There are actually over 100 peaks in the mountain ranges west of the Pecos, and El Capitan in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park is the tallest of them all.

If your family enjoys outdoor adventures, you might enjoy the moderately challenging out-and-back trail that takes you just shy of 2000′ up the mountain. The trip is about 9.6 miles. Our family enjoyed it some years ago. Climbing to the peak would be MUCH more challenging. We didn’t try that, but this video will give you a preview.

While we were there, we also enjoyed the old Pinery Station–a popular stop on the original 2800-mile Butterfield Overland Mail Route.

We found plenty of low-key things to see and do that really gave us a taste of the history of this remote area. It’s still remote, but the adventures are easily accessible once you’re there!
