March is Texas History Month!
Did you know that both Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas were born on March 2nd?
Sam Houston was born March 2, 1793, and the Republic of Texas was born March 2, 1836.
Sam Houston was the commanding General of the Texas Army at San Jacinto, the first President of the Republic of Texas, and the third, as well! He also served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives, a United States Senator, and Texas’ 7th Governor. In so many ways the man was “larger than life”!
…and before coming to Texas, he had served as a U.S. Congressional Representative and Governor in Tennessee as well!
Teaching Tip: Maybe you’d like to celebrate both birthdays this year as you study Texas history. Perhaps a sheet cake decorated like the state flag? Please leave a comment to tell us what your family does to make the day special!
