Today we wish a happy birthday to Texas race car driver A. J. Foyt–“Super Tex.”
Anthony Joseph Foyt, Jr. was born January 16, 1935 in Houston, Texas.
Mr. Foyt is retired now, but during his career he raced stock cars in NASCAR and in the United States Automobile Club, winning several major events.
He holds the USAC record with 159 career wins and the American championship racing record with 67 career wins. He is the only driver to win the Indianapolis 500 (four times!), the Daytona 500, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He also won the International Race of Champions all-star racing series back-to-back in 1976 and 1977. These wins and many others have earned him induction into numerous Halls of Fame.
Mr. Foyt survived serious injuries in four major car crashes. Even after he retired from active racing, A. J. Foyt Enterprises enabled him to support other racing teams.
