I love history, but my degree is in architecture, so when it’s especially interesting when I find things that combine those two interests…like this little jewel of a hotel in San Antonio.
The Fairmount Hotel was built in San Antonio in 1906, but by 1984 it was looking a bit tatty. Abandoned and outdated, it was in danger of demolition to make way for the Rivercenter Marriot, but instead Texas engineers moved it 5 blocks to a new location. It took six days to move the hotel at a top speed of 4 miles per hour. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the Fairmount Hotel was the largest structure ever moved on wheels!
Watch how they did it here!
