Near the Fannin Battleground State Historic Site is Presidio La Bahia, the Fort on the Bay, which was established in 1749 to protect the Mission Espiritu Santo.

La Bahia, now a National Historic Landmark, is the only surviving Spanish Colonial mission/presidio complex in Texas. It has been rebuilt to look as it did in 1836 when Col. James Fannin and his men were imprisoned here after the Battle of Coleto Creek. Each March the Goliad Massacre Living History Program, a two-day reenactment, commemorates the tragic events.
