Education majors spend a good deal of time studying Bloom’s Taxonomy of Learning. I will admit to you that I have not, BUT a basic knowledge of the levels of learning can be very helpful in understanding how we learn so that we can gauge how we teach.
The most basic level of learning, according to Bloom’s Hierarchy, is that of remembering the information given. In the concept of classical education, this is the Grammar level where students are introduced to new ideas and become familiar with them.
At this level, we can challenge students to:
- Identify
- Memorize
- Find
- Name
- Label
- List
- Copy
- Match
- Define
- Write
- Describe
- Tell
- Recall
Activities such as these will help them remember basic facts and fix them firmly in their minds.
